Gluten Free Breads that are Worth Looking For
It often seems that the hardest thing to find when on a gluten free diet is good bread. There are a lot of choices out there, but so few are worth the price you have to pay to get them. Unfortunately, taking a chance on store bought bread will sometimes leave you ten dollars poorer, and with a starchy, crumbly sponge.
One good solution is to make your own bread. There are a ton of great recipes here on Gling to do just that. I would agree that it is the best choice, but very time consuming. Also, if you are like me, bread will turn to stone in your oven and crumble before it hits the table.
To help those of you who, like me, are either too busy or not skilled enough with an oven to create their own sandwich casing I have some suggestions for you. These breads are the best I've found. Each one has a different texture and flavor. All of these breads come from fairly small sources and may not be available in every store. They are available online, however, so you can still enjoy them anytime!
Udi's Whole Grain Bread
The Up Side: Udi's Whole Grain Bread has a smooth texture and great flavor. It is a good bread for everyday use because the flavor lends itself to variety. The whole grains offer nutrition that is needed to balance out a gluten free diet.
The down side: The loaves are pretty small (which is typical of gluten free bread). Although the bread holds up well for most things, it is not very elastic. Too much moisture will crumble it and leave you eating it with a fork.
Kneaded Specialties White Sandwich Bread
The Up Side: This bread is so good that it melts in your mouth like butter! It has almost as much elasticity as normal bread and makes perfect B.L.Ts. You can order a whole loaf or a half loaf (the half loaf is the size you usually find for gluten free bread).
The Down Side: It doesn't make the best toast. The moisture content is so high in this bread that it is actually hard to toast! Also, Kneaded Specialties is hard to find outside of Kansas City, so there is no alternative when it comes to paying shipping.
Gluten Free Life Rich Brown Bread
The Up Side: It is exactly what the name suggests, very rich. It is made with whole grains and all natural ingredients. This bread is very tasty and very good for you!
The Down Side: Again, we have the small loaf problem. Also, it's very dry until you toast it. This is a great bread for dipping at holiday parties or for making grilled cheese and toast, but not so great for everyday cold sandwiches.
That's about it. I have tried other breads, but none of the others have been very impressive. I do believe there are plenty more out there and will let you know as I find them. If you know of a delicious gluten free bread that is list worthy, don't forget to add it to the site so we can bask in it's glory with you!
In the mean time, here are the sites you will need to order from in case you can't find these breads in your local store. Just click the links to go directly to the ordering pages.

By the way, each of the brands mentioned makes other scrumptious goodies as well. As long as you're ordering, you might want to taste test some other things they offer :)

Udi's is THE BEST gluten-free bread I've ever tried. Thankfully, it's sold in a store near here so I can enjoy it when I decide I don't want to make any of my own. :-) It's nice to know it's out there. I'll have to look for the others also and give them a try!!! Thanks for the info. :-) Merry Christmas to you and your family. :-)
