Making Gling Work For You: Part Six
We’re off again, Glingsters! Into the grand reaches of the Glingaverse- to find the secrets that lay within...
Yep, we all know by now how dramatic I can be at times, but you have to admit it makes things interesting :) Today we are going to do a lot of exploring. This edition of Making Gling Work For You will cover posting and finding locations, showing your love by marking your favorites and tweets. Let’s start with locations (mainly because you see that first on the page.)
Finding Locations
The first step to finding locations near you is to click on the Locations tab in the upper right corner of the main page. This will take you to the main locations listing page. Remember all the way back in Part Three when I said it was important to add your city and state to your profile? Now I will explain why.
The map on the right side of the locations page is your personal map. If you have entered your city and state in your profile, it should show your area. As you go through the pages of listings, the locations that are in your area will appear on your map. Convenient, huh?
As with recipes and food, you have tabs at the top to choose the listings you want to see. Choose from: Your Locations, Your Friends Locations and All Locations.
Each listing box will show the name of the business (which you click on for more information), the type of business (i.e. a Bakery) and the address and phone number. There are also voting triangles and a heart to favorite. Also, notice the gluten score. For a location to be Certified Gluten Free it means that there is no cross contamination possible at that location.
Clicking on the name of a location gives you more information and options for that listing. You can suggest the location to a friend, read articles about the location and see who has contributed to the information available. There is also a map for the location and a comment box. Notice that there is also an option to edit each location. If you know that a listing has changed, update your fellow Glingsters!
Posting Locations
Posting locations is easy, you just need to have the phone number and address handy. Click +Add Location to get started.
When you are on the posting page, enter the name, address, phone number and type of location. Don’t forget to add a gluten score and tags! Then click UPDATE and you’re done! The map will appear automatically for your listing.
Favorites
Ever find that perfect recipe on Gling, only to have trouble finding it again later? Marking things as favorites eliminates this problem!
Anytime you see a Recipe, Food or Location that you know you’ll want to see again, click the little heart in the listing. The heart will turn red, marking it as a favorite. From that moment on, that listing will be found on your favorites page.
Go to your favorites page by clicking Favorites in the side menu. Once there, all of your favorites will be listed for you to pick from. Each listing contains a link to the actual post on Gling. It’s an easy way to keep track of all the things you want to go back to, like creating your own guide/cookbook :)
Tweets
Tweets are a great way to keep people updated. You can tell what you’re doing, recommend great sites and take a poll, all in 140 characters or less.
When you click on the Tweets option in the side menu, it will take you to the Tweets You Follow page. Here you can see what’s going on with all of the people you have chosen to follow. There are plenty of other options from here, so let’s go to the list!
Friend’s Tweets- This tab will show you.... Your Friend’s Tweets! (I know, I’m full of surprises today)
All Tweets- Clicking this tab will show you the main tweets page. This is a great way to find new people to follow.
Your Followers- This is the list of people who follow your tweets.
Who You Are Following- This is the list of people who you are following.
Okay, I know this all seems pretty basic. Let’s dig a little deeper.
Each name on any of the Tweet screens is actually a link to that person’s profile. In order to follow someone, click on their name to check them out. Once you arrive at their page, click the Follow Tweets button. Now whatever they say will appear on your page. While you’re there, you might as well click the Invite button as well, then you can make a new friend :)
One of the many cool things about tweeting is that you don’t have to be friends with someone to tweet with them. (I’m not sure why I find that so cool... Maybe I just like having options)
That’s it for today! Thanks for joining me :) See you next Tuesday for Making Gling Work For You: Part Seven.
