Big News for All Glingsters!

Posted by: Marissa on April 20, 2010

Hello and happy Tuesday, Glingsters! You may have noticed that I’ve been a bit quiet on the site lately- Well, there’s a good reason for it. I’ve been working on a secret! A big one! I’m so excited today, because as we all know, the best thing about a big secret is getting to reveal it. So, here it is.... Drumroll please.....

As of today (Right this second in fact) Gling has formed a content partnership with Center for Celiac Research at the University of Maryland! (Which I will lovingly refer to as CFCR)

By the hush in the room I can guess that one of three things has happened, 1. You have no idea what that means; 2. You have no idea what would be so exciting about that; or 3. A random neighborhood dog just stole your last gluten free twinkie and you are desperately holding back tears of despair.

I’m going to assume that the problem is either one or two and spend the rest of this article getting you as excited about this whole thing as I am.

CFCR is the premier Celiac research facility in the world. They do an amazing amount of work for us, the gluten free eaters, and make the world a better place for us to live! Now, we all know that I’m prone to exaggeration, but in this case I may have been understating. They really are that amazing!

CFCR is responsible for creating the tests we all know and love that are now used world wide to diagnose Celiac Disease. They are also the first research center to isolate a possible cause, and a potential cure (more on that later). The team at CFCR works year round to learn as much as they can about Celiac.

They don’t stop there- They also spend as much time educating others! CFCR has a multitude of programs running at all times to educate the medical community and the private sector, perform clinical trials and raise funds and awareness.

Thing is, with all this going on, sometimes it’s hard for CFCR to get the word out to all the right people. For our part, gluten free eaters want all of the latest news, but we have a lot going on too. There’s not always time to go looking for the information we crave. This is precisely why the new content partnership is so exciting!

From here on out, you can get your CFCR news update twice a week right here on Gling! That’s right! You can now get recipes, learn about food, find a place to eat, AND get the latest research updates from CFCR all in the same place! Not only research updates, though, I will also be providing plenty of information on the research center itself and how you can get involved and help raise Celiac Awareness where you live.

Oh, yes, “This IS the beginning of a beautiful friendship.” Stay tuned, and invite your friends to join us as we venture into this exciting new territory.

Oh, and if the reason for your silence was losing your gluten free twinkie, I’m very sorry to hear that! The good news is that I may have a new source for finding more! Once I get the full details I’ll add them to the Food Database, just for you :)

Editorial Note 4/21/10 I had those initials wrong, folks, sorry about the confusion :)

Thank you Marissa, this really is good news. Question: Is there a UMCCR contact with whom I can communicate? I'd be very interested in sharing some of my non-scientific GF sourdough findings with researchers in the hope of advancing our (Celiacs') knowledge. Thanks!
