Product Review: French Meadow Bakery Gluten Free Pizza Crusts

Posted by: Marissa on July 16, 2010

This review is brought to you today by the best friends a girl could ever have, or a guy for that matter. I got to try these gluten free pizza crusts at a pizza party some friends were having for their son’s birthday. They were kind enough to provide gluten free pizza for my daughter and I so we could enjoy the party too (nice, huh?!)

The crust they chose for our pizza was from French Meadow Bakery. These crusts come in a package of two, like a lot of other gluten free pizza crusts I’ve seen. Unlike other crusts, though, the ones from French Meadow were not pre-baked. Each crust was frozen dough that was already spread in it’s own little baking pan. I was told that this is why these crusts were chosen over the others in the case, the pans were so cute and convenient :)

French Meadow gluten free pizza crusts are easy to use. Just top them and throw them in the oven. The fact that the crusts come in pans adds a convenience factor in that the toppings stay right where they are supposed to, there is nowhere that they can slide off from.

The instructions say to bake the pizzas for 10-13 minutes in a 450 degree oven. We had to cook ours for about seven extra minutes to get the crust done all the way through. When they were cooked they looked very tasty in their little pans.

To top my pizza, I chose all veggies: onions, olives, green pepper and tomatoes (and of course, sauce and cheese). D.D. just wanted pepperoni on her pizza. Both pizzas looked great, golden brown and appetizing. My pizza was pretty darn tasty! The veggies added moisture and flavor that I loved. D.D.’s pizza was a bit dry and had a funny flavor to it. Based on this, I came to the conclusion that French Meadow gluten free pizza crusts taste okay and bake up nice, but they do not have a good enough flavor to be eaten alone. I recommend topping them high, no little brush of garlic butter will do.

One other note that I want to add about these crusts is that they are pretty allergy friendly. Along with being gluten free, the are also free of lactose, casein and peanuts. That means they are versatile enough to feed to families with multiple food sensitivities.
