Product Review: Katz Gluten Free Cinnamon Strip and Chocolate Strip

Posted by: Marissa on July 28, 2010

At my house, we’re all about the sweet stuff. I try to monitor the sugar intake, but sometimes even I get caught up in a sugar binge. Now, I’m not saying that this is a good thing, I don’t even have any tips for avoiding the occasional need for sweetness. Nope, I just wanted to let you know that we tend to know what we’re talking about around here when it comes to desserts :)

Awhile back, I was lucky enough to receive a box of baked goodies to try from Katz Gluten Free. Katz is a pretty distinctive company when it comes to gluten free goodies. Not only are they kosher, but the entire facility is gluten free, nut free and dairy free. This makes them a great option for those that have families with multiple sensitivities.

In the box, among other things, I found a chocolate strip and a cinnamon strip. As soon as we saw them in the package, D.D. and I did a high five. They looked so good! The strips were rolled (jelly roll style) sweet bread and filling. They come frozen, and they instructions said “thaw and serve”. It was a long wait...

Since D.D. and I are gluten free and my husband is not, we often have to chow down on separate treats because gluten free portions are usually very small. I loved the fact that the strips from Katz were big enough for all three of us to share. We even had some left over!

The bread itself had a great texture. It was firm, flakey and fun to munch. The filling in the cinnamon strip was rich and spicy. It had fantastic flavor that lingered on the tongue. The filling in the chocolate strip was also very rich. It had a dark chocolate flavor rather than the super sweet chocolate I expected. I was very surprised that neither strip was super sweet. They were both sweet enough to be satisfying, but not over the top.

The only problem with the cinnamon and chocolate strips from Katz Gluten Free was that both were a bit dry. I would not recommend eating one without a glass of milk or a cup of coffee to drink. On a side note, though, both were fantastic with coffee! It makes me wish that coffee shops everywhere carried them.

I can definitely say that I recommend checking out the cinnamon strips and chocolate strips from Katz Gluten Free. They are a perfect mild dessert to serve to company or spoil yourself with.
