Product Review: Udi’s Gluten Free Bagels

Posted by: Marissa on Aug. 5, 2010

It’s time for another review out of the happy Udi’s box! I can’t tell you how excited it made me to pull a package of gluten free bagels out of the box. I love bagels, and as of yet, haven’t found any gluten free ones that thrilled me.

The gluten free bagels from Udi’s are huge! They are bigger than my hand. When I pulled one out of the package the first thing I did was smell it. I know that seems strange, but the last gluten free bagel I tried had a scent that reminded me of wet dog so I had to check. The Udi’s bagel smelled like sweet, buttery pastry. It was like smelling a croissant in a bakery. It made me very happy!

I threw a bagel in the toaster- where it got very burned... My fault, not Udi’s. I forgot to check the setting. Since it was only black on the outside, though, I still got to eat that one. Surprise! It even tasted good burnt. (A bit crunchy, though :) The next one I tried I was more careful with.

Udi’s bagels (when not burned) are very good. They are chewy on the outside and very soft on the inside. They are not as dense and chewy as a “regular” bagel would be, more like bagelrolls. I can’t complain about the flavor, though. That first smell I took was a good indicator. They are full of great fresh flavor with a hint of buttery bakery flavor.

These gluten free bagels are great for multitasking. I would use them for pizzas, sammiches, just about anything. Of course, my favorite use for a bagel is to eat it plain with some cream cheese. They are a bit pricey, but worth the cost for the size and flavor.

I would recommend Udi’s gluten free bagels based on the fact that they are the closest I have gotten to a “regular” bagel since going gluten free. Not to mention that they are just happy bread in general :)
