Product Review: Chebe Onion and Garlic Bread Mix

Posted by: Marissa on Oct. 5, 2010

My lovely sister introduced me to Chebe mixes at my first gluten free Thanksgiving dinner. I immediately fell in love with the bread sticks and made a note of the brand so that I could make them for myself. It wasn’t until I actually bought a package and made it for myself, though that I really fell in love with Chebe. It was so easy to make!

The mix comes in a bag. To prepare the bread you only have to open the bag and add oil, egg and water or milk. Mix the dough together and shape it into loaves, bread sticks... any shape, really, then bake it. Seriously, that’s it. It is the most low maintenance bread mix I have ever used.

The flavor of this mix is fantastic! The onion and garlic flavor is great all by itself, but subtle enough to blend with any kind of herbs or cheese you want to add in. The bread bakes up with a chewy crust on the outside and a very tender crumb inside.

The only problem I have is that I end up under-cooking my bread about 50% of the time. I’m not sure why or how, but it seems to have something to do with the amount of moisture that I add to the mix.

Something else that is important to add about this Chebe mix is that it is very allergy friendly. The Onion and Garlic flavor is:

  • gluten free

  • wheat free

  • lactose free

  • casein free

  • yeast free

  • soy free

  • corn free

  • rice free

  • potato free

  • peanut free

  • tree-nut free

  • MSG free

To top all that, it is made in a dedicated gluten free facility and certified by the Celiac Sprue Association. It doesn’t get much more allergy friendly than that :)

I’m pretty sure that Chebe Onion and Garlic bread mix was my first official gluten free pantry staple. I always keep one on hand for quick dinner bread. Any member of my household can throw a mix together and have bread on the table in about a half hour.

Do you need a bread-maker machine or can you bake in a regular loaf pan in the oven?
