Product Review: Glutenfreeda Vegetarian Bean and Cheese Burrito
We used to have a tradition in our house. Every Friday night is family movie night. We do a dinner of easy finger foods and eat in front of the T.V. (instead of at the table) while we watch the movie. It used to be that once a month or so we would do a mexican theme. We would get a package of frozen burritos or taquitos and pair them with a plethora of dipping sauces.
We still have family movie night, but the mexican theme is not so common anymore. Our gluten free diet made the packages of burritos off-limits and making our own is a bit too time consuming for this special night. Not that I’m complaining. We still have plenty of choices in what to eat. Thing is, sometimes I just find myself missing the convenience of those frozen burritos, and yes, I admit it, I like the taste :)
I was pretty stoked when I saw Glutenfreeda frozen burritos in the store for the first time. A gluten free burrito in a flour tortilla?! Then I saw the price tag. At almost $4 apiece, they were certainly not a candidate for family movie night. I did decide to try one, though, thinking that it would be good for a work-day lunch.
The instructions on the package say to wrap the burrito in a paper towel and heat it in the microwave for a minute and a half, then flip it over and do it again. (The other option is to wrap it in foil and bake it for 45 minutes.) So far it is just like the frozen burrito goodness I remember.
After the allotted heating time I excitedly began to unwrap my prize, only to discover that it had sealed itself to the paper towel. I lost a good chunk of the tortilla in the transfer from paper towel to plate but was able to salvage most of the burrito. Since the tortilla was open now, I was able to see the filling. I saw rice and corn mixed with the beans and cheese. Bonus for me, I’m a sucker for spanish rice. I grabbed a fork and commenced munching.
It was really good! I wasn’t sure what to expect from the tortilla, but it tasted like a flour tortilla. The filling had a bit of a middle-eastern flair to it and it was pleasantly spiced. I loved the textures and the way the rice and corn lent a nice bite to the gooey beans.
I was very pleased with the overall flavor and quality of Glutenfreeda Vegetarian Bean and Cheese Burrito. I wish I could say the same about the price. Well, you can’t win them all, I guess :)
