Product Review: Mary’s Gone Crackers Ginger Snaps Love Cookies

Posted by: Marissa on March 29, 2011

Mary’s Gone Crackers has been a favorite in the gluten free cracker biz. They do things with seeds and seasonings that boggle the taste buds. Now that they’ve moved into the realm of cookies, though, it’s like a whole different world.

Today marks the second flavor in the line that I have tried. Though the ginger snaps are about as healthy as a cookie can be, they are somewhat lacking in the smile factor.

I really liked the first bite I took. They are very spicy and mildly sweet. On the tail end of that first bite, heading into the second, I was overtaken by bitterness. The bitterness in the tale end of the flavor made the rest of the cookie taste as if it weren’t sweet at all.

This made me remember a time a few years ago when I was visiting a friend around Christmas time. She had made “traditional gingerbread cookies” from an old family recipe (German, I think). She warned me that I was welcome to try them, but they weren’t the gingerbread I was used to and they weren’t for everybody. The cookie she gave me was all spice and bitterness. Mary’s Gone Crackers Ginger Snaps Love Cookies are made more in this style. I am apparently the “everybody” that these cookies are not for, but the memory of watching the family around me devour them with pleasure leads me to recognize this as a preference thing.

On the other hand, the texture of the cookies is perfect! They are crispy with just enough softness in the middle to give the melt-in-your-mouth effect. I have no complaints there.
