Product Review: NuGo Free Carrot Cake
This product has been sitting on my shelf for a couple days now. Every time I would walk through the kitchen I would pick it up and squeeze it gently, hoping to get an idea of what it was. The wrapper says it is certified gluten free, dairy free, soy free, vegan and 100% natural. There are also 9g of protein packed into the 1.59oz bar. All this leads me to think protein bar - but the wrapper says carrot cake.
I finally opened the wrapper tonight and discovered that the bar is of a crisp rice variety. It is soft to bite into and not too sticky. It has a few raisins spread throughout and bits of dried carrot as well. It is an interesting texture to bite into.
The main flavors in the bar are chicory root and a bit of cinnamon. There is also a pronounced flavor of brown rice syrup. I didn’t notice any added flavor from the raisins or the carrots.
Though the flavor is carrot cake-esque, it is the savory kind of carrot cake as opposed to the sweet kind. The bar does have a drizzle of icing that attempts to add sweetness but that flavor quickly gets lost among the others.
To be perfectly honest, I am not thrilled with NuGo Free Carrot Cake. Then, I was never pleased with savory carrot cake either.
