Product Review: NuGo Free Dark Chocolate Trail Mix Bar

Posted by: Marissa on July 21, 2011

It’s protein bar day! Not officially - it just sounded like a good opener :) I am grateful for the existence of protein bars today. We seem to be under an endless heatwave here. I don’t do heat well. It always leaves me feeling hot, tired, dry and drained of all life. I also don’t get very hungry when I’m hot. Picking up a little extra protein makes a big difference.

The NuGo Free Dark Chocolate Trail Mix Bar is an interesting conglomeration of flavor. I say interesting because on the first bite I was not thrilled but by the last bite I was hooked - I actually wanted more!

The bar is made up of brown rice crisps and nuts dipped in very dark chocolate. This is a pretty good combo, but the “protein bar” taste was the first thing that hit me. There was a slight fruity hint that put me off a little too.

Then I bit into a dried cranberry. The combination of dark chocolate, tart cranberry and sweet brown rice crisps was awesome! This was about the point that I decided I did, in fact, really like the bar.

On the nutrition end of things, this bar ranks pretty high. Ir it dairy free, soy free, gluten free, vegan and kosher. There are 9g of protein packed into the 1.59oz. bar.

In the end, I have decided that I will look for this bar again in the future. I will hope that NuGo Free decides to add a few more cranberries to the next batch, though.
