Product Review: Thai Kitchen Original Pad Thai

Posted by: Marissa on July 14, 2011

Pad Thai is a fairly recent discovery for me. I have never been a big fan of spicy food and was under the impression that all Thai food was super hot. Now I am lamenting all of the years I’ve missed out on. I love the mix of tangy, sweet and spicy!

I had some at a restaurant a couple weeks ago and it sparked the craving. It was one of those wicked, creeping cravings that sneaks around in the back of your mind all day. I knew something had to be done so I set out to make Pad Thai from scratch.

It was a nice idea… Most of the ingredients were not available at the store I was at. There was, however, a lovely red box from Thai Kitchen that offered me both the sauce and the noodles for just a couple dollars. I grabbed it, excited about the prospect of killing the craving AND having a new product to review.

The only thing in the box is Pad Thai Sauce and rice noodles. The box says to add meats and/or veggies, bean sprouts, an egg and oil. I wasn’t in a meat mood and the store was out of bean sprouts. Ever determined, I picked up a package of broccoli slaw to count as both my veggies and my sprout-like crunch.

This is quite possibly the best decision I have ever made. (A bit dramatized, yes, but it worked out so well!) The front of the box is not fibbing when it promises that food will be ready in 15 minutes. I cooked the egg, sauteed the veggies while soaking the noodles, put everything together and stirred. It was all very easy. I threw in a bit more of the raw broccoli slaw at the end of cooking to add some texture.

I was very impressed at the flavor I got from the sauce packet. It wasn’t restaurant quality, perhaps, but it wasn’t anything to complain about either. It was delicious! It was sweet and tangy, but could have used a bit more spice.

The prepared box made enough Pad Thai for my daughter and I each to have a large bowl. This is perfect since my husband won’t eat the stuff.

I can definitely recommend this one. I have looked at the cost of the ingredients to make Pad Thai from scratch and I think I will stick with this box. It is fast, inexpensive and I don’t have to special order any ingredients.
