Product Review: Amy’s Gluten Free Burrito
The first thing I want to say here is that I’m sorry if I got the title of the product wrong. The wrapper actually says: Amy’s Gluten Free Burrito Made with Organic Beans and Rice - Non Dairy. The wrapper also boasts of having No GMO’s.
Thing is, this is one of those products that you have to choose carefully in the store. My darling hubby brought home two of Amy’s burritos to try and it wasn’t until I was starting to cook them that I realized one of them was not gluten free. Apparently they are all stocked in the same place in the store and he was grabbing for variety, not realizing that the company made whole wheat burritos as well. Amy’s labels the gluten free version clearly so make sure you look for the label before you buy.
Ease of Use
The burritos are easy to make. You have the choice of using the oven or the microwave.
To bake, wrap the burrito in foil and cook in a 400 degree oven for 20 minutes. Turn the burrito over and heat it an additional 25-35 minutes.
To microwave, place the burrito on a plate and cook at 50% power for 1-1 1/2 minutes. Then turn the burrito over and cook an additional 1-1 1/2 minutes at full power.
For the record, I microwaved the burrito for this review.
Appearance
Amy’s Gluten Free Burrito looks quite tasty. The outer wrap is nice and solid. I also noticed tiny bubbles in the wrap itself. For some reason this made it look even more appetizing.
Something else worth mentioning is that this may be the first frozen burrito ever that didn’t break open while cooking. I was even able to split it in half right after it came out of the microwave and it held together well.
Taste and Texture
The wrap was very soft and pliable. It had a great flavor all of it’s own. The filling (beans and rice) was very good as well. It was mostly bean but the rice still made a good showing. Overall, the best way I can describe this gluten free burrito is to say that it was just like most of the frozen burritos I’ve ever had (including the gluten filled ones). I see this as a compliment in the way that if I can’t find a reason to complain then everything must be going well.
Versatility
Not much room for versatility in this one. I did think about going against anything healthy about the burrito and frying it… I’m pretty sure this will have to happen. It would make an excellent chimi.
Overall Value
The biggest difference between Amy’s Gluten Free Burrito and the gluten filled ones is the price. Burritos used to be a guilty indulgence that only cost around a dollar. For this burrito you can count on spending around $3.60. Considering the size, this seems a bit steep to me.
Rating
I liked this gluten free burrito a lot. It tasted good and helped me to remember the freer (though less healthy times) of microwave burritos by the dozen.
