Product Review: Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough LaraBar

Posted by: Marissa on Sept. 20, 2011

Let me start off this review by saying that this is one of the strangest things I have ever put in my mouth. I was tipped off that this might be the case by the creamy colored wrapper with brown dots that made the claim, "The Original Fruit and Nut Food Bar". I'm still not sure why, but this statement made me giggle. I was curious, intrigued and a bit apprehensive as I opened the wrapper...

Ease of Use

This is a bar, so there is no real "use" to it. It is solidly packed and not too sticky to eat on the go.

Appearance

I unwrapped this bar to find that it looked just like every other fruit and nut bar I've seen. It is a brown rectangle interspersed with white chunks and dots. Trust me, it is not my intention to make this product sound unappetizing, I just want to set up my reasons for surprise. I had thought that a Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough bar would look different. I guess I am accustomed to seeing cookie dough as a creamy color - like the color on the wrapper. Really, though, it did look tasty, just nothing like I expected.

Taste and Texture

I am wracking my brain to find the right adjectives to describe Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough LaraBar. It is soft, chewy, sweet, tangy, chocolatey and strangely amazing. The texture actually reminds me of cold cookie dough. It is that soft and squishy texture that I remember from the old gluten filled bowls of cookie dough. (I don't eat cookie dough anymore since most gluten free varieties are a gooey grainy mess :) There are plenty of nuts (cashews) and chocolate chips in this bar. They have the perfect soft texture to blend into the bar while adding texture and firmness.

The flavor... Where to start? I gave D.D. a bite and she said, "Mmmm, chocolate cherry?" I said, "Nope, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough." She looked confused - crinkled brow, pursed lips and all. Then she came to terms with it, nodded once and said, "I can see that." We both really liked the combination of rich chocolate and tangy fruit.

Versatility

This bar is a fantastic conglomeration of flavor and texture, but doesn't offer much in the way of versatility. I am okay with that.

Overall Value

This tasty tidbit cost just under $2 in the grocery store. The bar is small, but worth the price.

Rating

I wasn't sure at first, but I think I really love this bar.
