Product Review: Rudi’s Original Sandwich Bread

Posted by: Marissa on Oct. 26, 2011

Rudi’s Bread comes in the biggest gluten free loaves that I have ever seen! The loaf is almost “normal” size. Maybe the size is created by the “fluffy ingredients” used to make the loaf. Maybe Rudi’s is just a generous company. Whatever the cause, I have to say that I appreciate it.

Ease of Use

This product is as easy to use as… well… sliced bread. You can eat it right out of the package, but it is better after being toasted.

Appearance

Each slice of bread is large by gluten free standards. The crust is solid and the crumb is soft with even holes. The bread has a golden-brown color. You can tell by looking that though this is not a whole grain bread it is not a white bread either.

Taste and Texture

I actually had to take the bread away from my daughter at lunch today. She LOVED it! She was eating a can of soup at the time and had been complaining about it. It was lentil soup, which we usually make from scratch, and she was disappointed because it had an “artificial” taste. She opened the bag of bread (purchased this morning) and began dipping it in her soup. Along with the “mmmm”, “ooh” and “ahh” sounds she made, there was also a cry of, “Mom! You have to try this! The bread tastes so natural that it makes the soup taste better too!”

I have to admit that I was not as thrilled with the flavor as she was. It is true that the bread has a very “natural”, even home baked taste, but I also noticed a strange flat taste underneath. That little bit of odd flavor did not keep me from enjoying the rich, warm sweet flavors that come through with this bread.

The texture was somewhere between soft and spongy (though not a dry, solid sponge like a lot of gluten free breads I’ve tried). It is better toasted but is just fine right out of the bag.

Versatility

Bread is always very versatile. Since it is soft enough to eat right out of the package it can be used for cold sandwiches, hot sandwiches and improving artificial soup. It would also be great for making croutons, garlic bread and mini pizzas. Really, there is no limit to the possibilities here.

Overall Value

Rudi’s Original Sandwich Bread runs around $6.50 per bag. This is great value as far as gluten free bread goes. The package is larger than most and can be eaten without toasting.

Rating

I am bothered by the flat under-taste, but thrilled by the other flavors. I do plan to buy this bread again.
