Product Review: NuGo Slim Raspberry Truffle

Posted by: Marissa on Oct. 27, 2011

I was pretty excited when I was first contacted to do a review for NuGo. The company just debuted NuGo Slim, a new protein bar that is nearly sugar free. The big draw for me is the fact that these bars are not made with any artificial sweeteners whatsoever. I tolerate artificial sweeteners about as well as I do gluten (which is not at all) so I avoid anything sugar free or “light”. The fact that these bars offer 15g protein, 10g fiber and only 2g sugar is perfect for me. Not to mention that they are dipped in real dark chocolate - win win!

What wasn’t as great was when I noticed that each bar also has 170 calories and 140mg sodium. It’s a trade off I suppose.

Ease of Use

This is a ready to eat bar that can be taken along and eaten anywhere.

Appearance

The bar has a good size to it. It is rectangular, covered in very dark chocolate. I expected it to be red or pink inside due to the raspberry flavor, but it was just as dark chocolate looking on the inside as it was on the outside.

Taste and Texture

It was a surprise to me how crispy the bar was. It was like eating a very firm brownie full of rice crisps. The chocolate on the outside is smooth but has virtually no ability to melt on the tongue.

The flavor is nothing but rich dark chocolate and a hint of red raspberry. It is important to note that this bar is made with VERY DARK chocolate. If that is your thing, awesome! I loved it but I couldn’t get D.D. to take a second bite because she likes her chocolate a few shades lighter. I also liked the fact that there was only a hint of sweetness in the bar. I didn’t feel like I was eating candy.

Versatility

Since this is a bar there is not a whole lot of versatility. I do like the fact that there is no sticky, gooey factor to contend with when out and about.

Overall Value

You can grab a NuGo Slim Raspberry Truffle Bar for under $2. Not too shabby.

Rating

I really liked this bar. I’ll look for this flavor again in the future, especially if I need a chocolate fix but not a sweet overload. (You’d be amazed how often this happens.)

This product was sent to me to try, free of charge, with no obligation or incentive to provide a favorable review.
