Product Review: Rudi’s Multigrain Gluten Free Bread
You can tell by looking at the packaging that Rudi’s is a happy company. I love the promises of fluffy ingredients and bread baked “on the bright side”. It made me smile just to read the package. I also love the fact that Rudi’s Multigrain bread is certified gluten free and made from some pretty healthy stuff.
Unfortunately, I was not happy with the bread itself. For the record, I tried the bread straight out of the package. I didn’t toast it or put any toppings of any kind on it until after the first “pure” taste.
Ease of Use
This gluten free bread comes frozen from the store, but otherwise ready to eat. You can eat it as is or toast it to improve the flavor and texture.
Appearance
Each slice is generously proportioned for gluten free bread. When you look at it you can see all of the coloring and markings you would expect from whole grains. There is also the addition of whole flax seeds and balls of millet.
Taste and Texture
I’ll be honest, this bread did not impress me. On first taste I was struck by how off the flavors were. D.D. said it tasted burnt to her, I said it was more of a dirty water taste. Either way, it wasn’t great. On top of the flavor is the fact that the texture is nothing to brag about. The bread itself is a bit dry and crumbly and some of the seeds were hard enough to lodge themselves in my teeth.
The strange thing about this bread is that it had a reverse effect from what I am used to. I really didn’t like the first taste but the aftertaste was awesome! It had a rich, almost homemade taste. Once that kicked in I was pretty happy.
Versatility
Bread is always pretty versatile. This loaf I will probably save in the freezer and cut up for stuffing. It is full of healthy ingredients and will work great in that recipe.
Overall Value
Each loaf runs around $6 depending on where you buy it. It is comparably priced to most gluten free bread out there.
Rating
I won’t be looking for this bread again.
