I have been meaning to try out some products from Shabtai Gourmet for quite some time. I have heard great things, and the online store has amazing pictures. Unfortunately, until recently I had never seen anything from this brand at my local retailers (and I despise paying shipping). I got pretty excited when I found this box of Gluten Free Chocolate Chip Cookies.
Ease of Use
The packaging makes me smile. The cookies come in a box like you would get from a bakery. Inside, the cookies are artfully arranged under plastic on a Styrofoam tray. This company seems to put equal emphasis on style and freshness. Once you open the plastic, it is easy to eat the cookies right out of the box.
Appearance
I have never seen chocolate chip cookies made this way. The cookies are small (two bites for me) and golden brown. The top of each cookie is absolutely covered in chocolate chips. This gives the illusion of extra chocolate when really there is the same amount since there are no more chips mixed into the cookies. With these what you see is what you get, you can count every chip before you eat your cookie… Though why you would I’m not sure.
Taste and Texture
The texture is as unique as the look. The cookies are light and delicately crispy. The chocolate chip topping is sweet, rich, and chocolatey. There is a bit of an off flavor with these cookies that I can’t quite put my finger on. It isn’t a bad flavor, really, just not the typical chocolate chip cookie flavor. It may stem from the fact that these cookies are not as sweet as most others I have had.
Versatility
I would love to see how the light and crisp texture of these cookies holds up as the crust of a cheesecake.
Overall Value
The website has the retail price of this 10 oz. box of Shabtai Gourmet Gluten Free Chocolate Chip Cookies listed as $8.19. That is just too much for me to pay for a single box of cookies, gourmet or otherwise.
Rating
These were good cookies, but the price will keep me on the lookout for other brands.
