Fall is in the air....time for chowder!

Fall felt like it had arrived at our place this week! Much cooler temperatures, clouds, a bit of a breeze, turning leaves and some rain. I know many would think I am crazy, but I love fall! I love the colder days, the breezes, the falling leaves, the color and the rain. Makes me feel like curling up on the sofa with a good book, or cookbook, cup of tea in hand and a fire going in the wood stove.

Yes, I am a bit nuts, I know. The color and smell of fall is absolutely exciting to me! It also makes me want to be in my kitchen, I know, imagine that. Some of my favorite foods carry with them the smell and feel of a stormy fall day. Today, the perfect food in my book is chowder!

Think chowder is beyond your culinary skills? Absolutely not, chowder is one of the first soups I was ever taught to make by my mom. Her corn chowder was always a favorite. I've played with it a bit over the years, but hers was a really good and satisfying fall meal!

Even though mom's was really good, I love to play with dishes and I found a really yummy corn-cheddar chowder in one of my favorite cookbooks. This recipe came from a Gooseberry Patch book called "Holidays at Home" and has all the feel of home in the country.

The fragrance of onions and butter cooking, is one of my favorites. The blending of that fragrance with potatoes, corn and cream is a winner in my book! My family loves chowder of just about any kind, corn is the one that we have most often though. It's not only a wonderful combination, but it's inexpensive and filling too!

A wonderful bread to serve with this yummy, mouth watering chowder is a hot pan of corn bread. My new favorite corn bread is one that was recently posted here on Gling by one of our members.

This corn bread is so easy to make and screams the flavor of corn. I made mine in a cast iron skillet as recommended in the recipe and it came out beautifully! Sliced into wedges, then sliced in half crosswise and slathered with butter is pure corn bread heaven.

Pair these two together and you will have a wonderful and filling fall meal to feed your family. Best part is, it's not hard, it's not a long and involved recipe and you will get rave reviews from both your gluten-free family and your gluten eating friends. No one will be the wiser that they are missing anything because they won't be!
