Traveling with Christmas goodies

Posted by: valeriefender on Nov. 22, 2009

'Tis the season of tasty treats, trips over the river and through the woods to visit with family and friends to share your yummy goodies! Traveling can be hard on many gluten-free goodies, but it can be done. Honestly, there are some gluten-free treats that just do not hold up to traveling, but rest assured that there are many that do nicely.

Candy is an easy treat to share and it travels really well, for the most part. There are some that need to be kept cold, if you are wanting to share these, simply take along a small cooler with your confections in it. Many candies like brittle and candied nuts travel very well. My favorite way to transport these treats is in a plastic food storage box or tin.

Here is are a few confections that will travel really well from your home to your family and friends:

If you are going to be traveling a distance from your home, these confections may need to be transported in a cooler to ensure that they arrive safely:

Cookies are a whole different creature. Many gluten-free cookies fall apart when moved, but there are some that travel quite well. Some creative packaging sometimes helps even fragile cookies arrive safely.

Try packaging your cookies in large muffin paper liners, then pack them together in a small food storage container. Be careful not to stack too many on top of each other, especially if they are soft. Placing waxed paper or parchment paper between layers of soft cookies often helps them not stick together when stacked. This will also work for frosted cookies, if the frosting is set up before packaging.

Still worried about your cookies and traveling with them, who can blame you? Those sweet treats took time to make, most likely taste wonderful and you want to be able to share them with the special people in your life. Cookies are often a gift during this holiday season. No one wants to give a dear friend crumbs. Right?

If your cookies are on the small sized, try stacking a few in a muffin tin to protect them. It is easy to transport three dozen cookies this way. If you have one of those covered cupcake carriers, even better!

Need a list of ideas for your holiday baking? Here are a few to get you started:
