Just like those caramel apples they sell at the candy stores, only better!

The best caramel apples I have ever had. Make them your own, put your own toppings on them, or make them as the recipe directs. They are fun to make, the kids have a blast and then the best part...eating them! One batch is never enough, you will want to make more, I promise. Cut them up to serve at your holiday party, perfect for Halloween. Perfect for any time and so yummy!

Ingredients
1 package (14 ounce) caramels
2 tablespoons water
4 wooden sticks
4 large tart apples
2 cups chopped pecans or peanuts*
1 cup (6 ounces) semisweet chocolate chips
1 teaspoon shortening
1 cup crushed Heath Bars*
Instructions
In a double boiler, combine the caramels and water. Melt over boiling water, stirring until melted. Insert wooden sticks into apples; dip apples into caramel mixture, turning to coat. Coat with nuts and set on waxed paper to cool.
Melt chocolate chips and shortening as you did the caramel, in a double boiler. Drizzle chocolate over apples. Sprinkle with candy bits. Set on waxed paper to cool. Cut into wedges to serve.
*If nuts are a problem, leave them out. Put crispy rice cereal, crushed gluten-free pretzels, crushed gluten-free cereal, toasted pumpkin seeds, coconut, mini M&M’s…anything that sounds yummy!
*For a fun twist, add white chocolate. Mix some peanut butter in with the chocolate. Use dark chocolate. Play with it! There are SO many options out there.
