These are my very favorite family recipe. Make a double recipe because no one eats just one. Chocolate, peanut butter, coconut, maraschino cherries... Well worth the kitchen mess that making them creates!
| Prep time | 45 minutes |
| Cooking time | none! |
| Servings | 4-5 |
Ingredients
6 0z package of chocolate chips
1/5 brick of paraffin (or less) shaved or cut into small bits
4 Tbsp melted butter
2 cups powdered sugar
12 chopped maraschino cherries
2/3 cups chopped almonds (or other favorite nut)
2/3 cup crunchy peanut butter
1 cup fine flake coconut
few drops of cherry juice
Instructions
Use clean hands to mix melted butter, powdered sugar, cherries, peanut butter, coconut together a large bowl, adding a few drops of maraschino cherry juice to make a good consistency candy. You can refrigerate for half hour or so to make it easier to work with, if you like. Roll into small, approximately 2 Tbsp balls and set on waxed paper. Melt chocolate chips and paraffin together, preferably in double boiler. Carefully roll each candy ball through the chocolate on a metal spoon, coating each ball evenly, then set back on waxed paper to cool (not touching them until they are completely cooled.) Keep chilled in the fridge unless you are serving them!| Category | Dessert |

Let me just say that if anyone needs a holiday candy that is fun (if not quick) to make AND something that will have your guests drooling ... you should look no farther. These are quite simply the best you'll find. :)

Isn't paraffin a petroleum product? Is there any food based substitute that would work?

I would want to stay away from paraffin also, for health reasons. I have seen bees wax suggested, though I haven't tried it myself. I don't know why it wouldn't work though. I'd LOVE to hear any other ideas on this. :-)
